"When I first wrote that song I had a very complicated chorus for it. I was in the streets of Brazil and I was singing the song for people with my guitar. I realized the only part they understood was the 'I Love You' part. So I ended up just repeating [sings] 'I love you, I love you, I love you.' That melody really caught on and soon kids were dancing and singing. So we ended up going back to Brazil to make the video in the same way that I had written the song on the streets of Rio de Janeiro." - Michael Franti
Think you can't dance? Set your brain aside, open your heart, crank this song, and let your body do the rest. Voila! You're dancing.
Wonderful new friend Loren Grebanier sent the tune, adding, "Michael projects the love in a way where his genuineness is not a question (at least for me -- note: he sings/speaks of love in much of his music). I have a huge music collection and was a DJ for years, yet when he comes out with a new record, most times I feel as if I have been given a gift." Thank you so much for sharing, Loren, and for lending me Micheal Franti's Stay Human ("Exhale from the heart, not from the lungs / Speak from the heart, not from the tongue"), which is quickly becoming one of my favourite albums.
ILY pop trivia: The Dandy Warhols perform a song called "I Love You," which repeats those three little words fifty-six times in 4:12. The "Say Hey (I Love You)" video, at 3:48, packs in thirty-four. But the more I attempt to put my feelings about "Say Hey," into words, the further I get away from it. Maybe because dancing, not writing, is the best response. Or maybe because:
The more I see
the less I know
But I know one thing
That I love you

LOVE this song! First time I heard it was in a ZUMBA class. Had to load it to my Ipod. It is so upbeat, it makes me want to turn it up and dance!
